Possible: no residence condition appears in the official sources. But the three-month notice given to the registrar is compulsory for everyone, and a meeting with them is still required before the ceremony.
- A compulsory three-month notice, given in person to a civil registration service; the period runs from the notification appointment, which both spouses attend.
- Couples not living in Ireland: contact a civil registration service to give notice by post, the three-month notice still applying, then meet the registrar at least five days before the ceremony.
- An exemption from notice exists, applied for at the court of the county where one of you lives, works or intends to marry; both attend and may have to give evidence on oath.
- Documents at the appointment: photo ID plus a copy, original birth certificate plus a copy, proof of address less than three months old, and a divorce decree where relevant.
- Any document not in English or Irish must be translated. EU public documents may come with the standard multilingual form; outside the EU, an apostille or an embassy letter.
- Notification fee: €200, non-refundable. Two witnesses aged eighteen or over for a civil ceremony.
The catch
The three-month notice can only be shortened by a court order. And non-EU nationals must produce up-to-date proof of their immigration status: an interview may be required, and the registrar refuses to issue the form where they believe the marriage is for immigration advantage.
