Legal marriage possible
Yes, and it is the most workable country in northern Europe. The file goes through the national authority Familieretshuset, which issues the certificate, after which the ceremony takes place in the commune of your choice. A lawful tourist stay is enough: no Danish residence is required.
- Familieretshuset handles the file whenever one of you is neither Danish, nor Nordic, nor holder of permanent residence in Denmark. The communes handle permanent residents only.
- The stay must be lawful, but a tourist stay is accepted. Since 10 April 2026, visa-exempt nationals produce printouts from the entry-exit calculator together with their boarding passes; others add the Schengen sticker.
- A residence permit issued by another Schengen state is on its own sufficient proof of lawful stay.
- The certificate issued is valid for four months — less if the passport, visa or residence permit expires sooner.
- Fee: DKK 2,100 for the certificate application, revised annually. Online payment only.
- The application is filed online. Without a Danish digital ID, you create a profile by email.
The catch
The timetable is not guaranteed. Familieretshuset advertises five working days for a complete file, but in September 2026 was processing files received in July wherever a document was missing. And the file is closed if both spouses have not each filed their part within fourteen days.

Yes. Marriage has been open to same-sex couples since the law of 12 June 2012, which also repealed the registered partnership.
