Yes, with conditions. The case is provided for: the official fee scale of the Prague districts expressly prices a marriage where neither spouse has permanent residence in Czechia. The caveat lies in the documents, which are heavy, and in a residence attestation to be obtained locally.
- Documents required of a foreigner: birth certificate, proof of nationality, certificate of capacity to marry less than six months old, attestation of civil status and residence, ID, and where relevant a divorce decree or death certificate.
- Third-country nationals must produce an attestation of lawful stay issued by the Czech police, dated no more than seven working days before the wedding. EU and EEA citizens are exempt.
- All foreign documents need an apostille or full legalisation and a Czech translation by a sworn translator.
- Administrative fees: CZK 5,000 where neither spouse has permanent residence in Czechia, CZK 3,000 where one does.
- If a spouse does not speak Czech, the couple must engage and pay for a court interpreter.
The catch
For a non-EU couple, the police attestation of lawful stay must be no more than seven working days old on the wedding day. You must already be in the country and complete that step in a very short window before the ceremony.
Same-sex couples
No, marriage is not open. Since 1 January 2025 the Interior Ministry describes “partnerství” as a permanent bond between two people of the same sex, entered into in the same way as a marriage but legally distinct from it.
