Getting married here as a foreign couple

Possible, with caveats

We do not claim it. No official source we could consult confirms that two non-resident foreigners may contract a legal marriage in Morocco: all of them describe marriage to a Moroccan national, subject to residence and religious conditions. Treat Marrakesh as a ceremony and reception destination, with the legal marriage contracted at home.

  • Moroccan authorities alone may perform a marriage in Morocco, whatever the spouses’ nationality. A foreign consulate cannot.
  • The consular sources consulted impose a condition of residence in the country or commune of celebration, and a condition of religion.
  • Authorisation from the Crown Prosecutor General at the competent court of appeal is required before the marriage.
  • The files described require, among other things, a residence certificate, a Moroccan criminal-record extract and a medical certificate, all translated into Arabic and legalised.
  • The French certificate of matrimonial capacity takes a minimum of three months from a complete file, with banns posted for ten days.
The catch

This is the least certain page on this site, and we would rather say so. Embassies warn that these formalities take considerable time and expense, and that a few weeks’ leave does not cover them. Book nothing on the strength of this page: have your exact situation confirmed by the Moroccan authorities and by your own consulate.
