• You must have lived in the registration district for the seven days before giving notice.
• Notice must be given at least twenty-nine days before the ceremony. It is then valid for twelve months.
• If one of you is from outside the UK or Ireland, notice must be given together, in person, at a designated register office.
• The Home Office is then involved: it may request information about the relationship, extending the wait to up to seventy days, and it may reject the notice.
• In practice: about seven days on the ground, then twenty-nine days’ wait. Either two trips, or a five-week stay.
